Vidyapurna Educational Sponsorship – Helping hand by Annapurna Pariwar

Apeksha Ashish Gavare, Najmin Mainuddin Shaikh, Prathamesh Pavan Kumbhar along with many other children have been able to continue their education thanks to the Vidyapurna program run by Annapurna Pariwar.  Vidyapurna – a sponsorship program by Annapurna Pariwar has been running for the last 16 years and has brought a smile on the face of many single mothers who wish to continue the education of their children.

Annapurna provides a platform to all those willing to contribute towards education for poor kids but, do not know how.

The scheme ‘Vidyapurna’ was conceptualized by Dr. Medha Samant (Founder Direcor) of Annapurna Pariwar back in 2002 when she met Miss Kanta, a widow and a mother of 3 children who came seeking for a loan from the organization. On asking her the reason for the loan she said, ‘It is for the education of my children, as I do not want to see them becoming like me’. This led to realization of hardships that a single mother from a slum faces for her child’s education and the bigger question of children’s future from such areas arose.

What followed was a brainstorming session and immediate application of ‘Vidyapurna’. Since then the scheme has helped thousands of students to grow and prosper by making education accessible despite challenging financial scarcity.

2018 marks the 16th anniversary of successfully securing the future of these kids. Under Vidyapurna, Annapurna has collected funds to sponsor 1000 children this year, of which 600 have already been provided scholarship worth Rs.2500 each.

Vidyapurna is an initiative towards upliftment of the society through providing scholarships to the deserving students of economically challenged families. A local study indicates that children of single mothers face tremendous difficulties in pursuing education as the earning responsibilities of the house falls on their shoulders too.

An in-depth framework is set to select the most deserving students who would avail scholarship in order to avoid irregularities in the selection process. Annapurna assigns a field executive who visits the houses for survey and picks out the eligible families; they are given a form that records all personal and financial information. These forms are then scrutinized by a senior member of the organization and the deserving applicants are finalised.

A meeting is held to brief them about the scholarship provisions and each kid is provided Rs.2,500 for an academic year. This is for students from nursery to 12th grade. The loan amount is disbursed in the month of June or July and a progress card with a thank you note from the children is provided to their sponsors by September.

Vidyapurna works with the aim of, ‘Bacchon ki shiksha, desh ka vikas’ (Nation’s progress through children’s education) and has put smiles on many young faces who, without Annapurna could not have pursued their dreams and helped mothers fulfill their ambitions of educating their children.
